The Paphos Big Band is a 16-piece big band playing music from the great American song book of the 1940’s thru to the 1970’s in the style of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman et al and featuring many of the singing hits of Frank Sinatra who in his day sang with all of these bands and many more. The band was formed by David Locke in collaboration with Cyprus’s leading jazz pianist George Morfitis as musical director and by virtue of the sponsorship and motivation of Sergei Polivar (our very own Sinatra!) had its premier performance in December 2017 at the Minthis Hills Golf Club. The band has a great line-up of five saxes, four trumpets and four trombones, a swinging rhythm section and the Sinatra vibe. At present the band has a cross section of musicians of all ages from 70’s down to 15! Part of the objective is to introduce and train young musicians. To this end there are three young Cypriots still studying at school playing saxes and trombones. The band also has a number of qualified Cypriot music teachers integrated into the band to assist with the bands’ development. The Paphos Big Band is seen as long-term music project demonstrating European co-operation and bringing a new musical experience to Cyprus.

Ian G is primarily known for rock but nonetheless began his musical career aged 15 as guitarist in a big band playing Count Basie and Duke Ellington tunes. His paired-down jazz guitar owes much to the octave style of Wes Montgomery while vocally he draws upon BB King, Tony Bennett, Al Jarreau Chet Baker & Van Morrison among others.
